This real photo postcard of fiddler Jakie Conaway and banjoist Ira Scott was shot on the occasion of their performance for the Cedar Grove School Breaking. In rural "one-room" school houses, the last day of school was marked by special festivities called School Breaking. Typically, a fiddler-- sometimes accompanied by other local musicians-- would perform for the students. (Collection of Shlomo Pestcoe)
