Thanks all. We've been having some dialogs about who's in charge on walks. He has this tremendous drive to meet other dogs, and to meet new people, especially women (which isn't such a bad idea, come to think of it.) The standard physical corrections just don't work - this breed is well known for having no reverse gear, and they are used to hunt hogs, bear, and cougar. I can handle him physically but he's rally strong, a handful, for sure, and I really don't like to jerk him around. Seems counterproductive, anyway. I only have to show him something like "down" or "stay" a couple of times for him to learn it, and he is very eager to please. The problem is that he just goes deaf in certain situations.
Had to learn a little more psychology instead of muscle. It's a matter of dominance in doggy terms. Always make him wait for me to go through doors first, NEVER let him lead on a leash, and make him Sit when other dogs come close until released. I found a gentle way to restrain him until he calms down, and it's working far better than wrestling with him. Changing direction when he starts to pull works, too.
