When I was 9 dad gave me a violin, (A Paolo Fiorini) I used to go carol singing with it. I only ever had one lesson, with a Mrs Duncan. I couldn't stand her, and she was too far away. I bought a German made Wolf violin when I started playing after moving to NZ and civilian life. I have collected several "ordinary" violins over time. Building one myself seemed worth a try and I could always hang it on the wall. I made the tools, bought the slabs of maple and spruce and spent just over two months working from 8am till late evenings almost every day. It was finished in Oct 2004. To my own amazement it sounds great, across all strings from the open G up to as far as a little finger can reach on the E. It is loud, full bodied sound, and it is the only violin I need or want to play. The finish is far from perfection, the scroll over sized, and some knife/scraper marks show thru the varnish. They weren't visible until it was varnished - but we learn eh.
