A newer Old Time fiddle tune by Virginia fiddler Jim Childress and one which is currently widely played at fiddle gatherings and jams. In this case, I recorded in multitrack, two fiddles (left and right), clawhammer banjo, hammered dulcimer, guitar, and bass.

Multitrack recording in 6 tracks: Muted banjo, guitar, bass (Michael Allen marimbula), fiddle, unmuted banjo, "clappers." The open back banjo is a Pisgah Rambler Special "foam-muted" on one track and and unmuted on another, both tuned to standard G tuning. Fiddle is a cheaper Hermann Luger model cross-tuned to GDGD.

One of my favorite Old Time fiddle tunes, this is a multitrack recording with me playing Fiddle, Banjo, Hammered Dulcimer, Guitar, and Bass, though you'll probably need either decent speakers or headphones/earbuds to hear the Bass (actually a Michael Allen-built Marimbula). Guitar and Bass join in beginning with the second verse. A bit about the history of this version of the tune as played by Ernie Carpenter from the Fiddler's Companion: SHELVIN ROCK [2]. AKA - “Shelby Rock.” Old‑Time, Breakdown. USA; West Virginia, Virginia. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning. ABB'. The melody is known as a "West Virginia old‑time fiddle classic." Ernie Carpenter claimed the tune was composed by his great‑grandfather Matt Jeremiah Carpenter, who is supposed to have written the tune in the late 18th century to commemorate his son Solomon's birthplace, an overhanging or "shelving" rock near the site of what became the Carpenter home in Webster County, West Virginia.

Multitrack (layering) recording (I use the name of Big Sugar Creek for these multitrack recordings) of a tune by Kentucky fiddler Wilson Mabe and played by the group Black Twig Pickers. Fiddle (GDGD), clawhammer banjo, bass, guitar, hammered dulcimer for melody sparkle).

A multitrack version of the tune with me playing fiddle, clawhammer banjo, bass, and guitar under the "virtual band" name of Big Sugar Creek. John Ashby's rendition is my favorite version of the tune, and this is but a very beginner / elementary version that I play. Sorry that my fiddle skills just don't permit me to play it any faster.

First heard this tune at a Sunday afternoon Old Time Jam (I was visiting, just passing through, and sat in playing some banjo and fiddle) led by Mac Traynham at the Floyd Country Store, Floyd, VA, in late October, 2013. SWEET MARIE. Old-Time, Breakdown. A Major. AEae tuning, which is also the cross tuning I'm using on the fiddle. Recorded myself in multitrack (headphones/earbuds will help bring out the bass).

Art Stamper's tune that he played in BEAE (low to high). In this case, I'm playing both fiddles in AEAE and recorded myself in multitrack: two fiddles, clawhammer banjo, hammered dulcimer, guitar, and bass.

Multitrack recording: Fiddle, Banjo, Bass, Guitar, Hammered Dulcimer. A tune very similar to "Charleston Gals," or vice versa.

Multitrack recording. Little ornamentation, simplified, skeleton version of this newer fiddle tune by Jordan Wankoff. Fiddle (AEAE) and Clawhammer Banjo with Bass and Guitar backing. The artist name on the mp3 recording file, "Big Sugar Creek," is just the name of my "virtual" one-man band.

Most likely from fiddler Jilly Grace, who Bob Wine (Melvin's father) heard play it, and Melvin subsequently learned it. Multitrack recording: Fiddle, Clawhammer Banjo, Marimbula (bass), Guitar, Dulcimer.

The last of the three tunes I recorded in multitrack today just for fun, and like the two others this one features Fiddle (ADAE), Clawhammer Banjo (aDADE), and Hammered Dulcimer playing melody, with Guitar and Bass backup.

Multitrack recording I made myself (under the name "Big Sugar Creek") with fiddle, clawhammer banjo, bass, guitar, and hammered dulcimer. A tune that probably originated in Missouri and was played by Howe Teague, Gene Goforth, and John Hartford.

A fiddle tune often played by fiddler James Bryan. This multitrack recording is a "skeleton" version of the tune [just can't hit all the fiddle 8th notes anymore] and features melody banjo and fiddle in the first round and throughout, guitar starting with latter part of round one, and bass and lightly played clawhammer rhythm starting in the second round. Earbuds improve audibility of all the parts.

A simple version of the Old Time dance tune, "Yellow Cat." Multitrack recording with Fiddle, Hammered Dulcimer, and Clawhammer Banjo teamed up for the melody, Guitar for rhythm, and Bass (though one probably needs better speakers or headphones/earbuds to hear the Bass). If downloaded, the "artist" name "Big Sugar Creek" that appears is just a "virtual name" for my multitrack recordings.
