Hello everyone,
This is my first post. Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice.
I have ended up with currently 6 low to middle end asian violins, all second hand, and one old German made trade violin. For practice doing them up, and learning to play. Very interesting. Becoming addicted.
First two do ups I used paint stripper to remove all the varnish. Very messy. Then thought it was about time to try scrapers, so bought $2 pack of steel scrapers from local el cheapo shop, cut them to shapes, sharpened the edges 90% with slight burr and proceeded to strip the varnish off the next one in about half the time!
If the scraper is sharpened right,( and admittedly the burr was a little jagged) i found I could go right down to the wood with one firm scrape! Don't know what the Asian varnish type is, but it was thick and brittle.(horrible job with the paint stripper. will throw the can out) Plenty of varnish dust and scrapings, (used a good mask) but much, much better than the stripper mess.
Hope this helps some.
