my purpose

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

hi,

my purpose for exploring this site is to hopefully gain some information for some genealogy research.  I am trying to find out about fiddle contests that would have been held in the 1920-1935 time frame in the north part of Texas especially around Palo Pinto County, Mineral Wells.  My great grandfather was a fiddler and had kin that was also.  I have been doing research on him for quite some time and keep hitting a brick wall. His name was Alford Newton York and he used to travel from Limestone and Navarro County to around the Mineral Wells area where he had family.  I have yet to find the family and only have a few pictures.  He had a niece, name I don't know that played guitar.  That is one of the pictures that I have, him and his neice as well as a picture of him and a brother who also played fiddle.  We think his name was Billy.  My great grandfather was born around 1872-1875.  We have no idea who his brothers and sisters were other than the possible brother Billy.  I have no records of his life until 1900 when I find him and his beginning family, my grandfather's siblings, on a census record in Navarro Co. ,Pisgah Ridge to be exact.  I thought maybe I could find out something that might lead me to some discovery of family if I could find out where the fiddle contests were.  My dad remembers that he used to go to the Mineral Wells area where family was and also for the contests.  Any information would be appreciated and I hope I have not violated any rules by asking this information.  My dad plays a french harp and guitar together, and I play piano yet did not ever learn to play by ear.  Have not played in a long time so can't even read the music well.  My sister plays guitar.  Alford taught my daddy to play both the french harp and guitar and was said to have been able to play any instrument he picked up.  His dad, JF York, also very talented, played fiddle.  We think there may have been a sister to Alford named Mary or Mary Catherine Davis.  Alford's next of kin he mentions on his military registration card states MC Davis of Palo Pinto County.
