Went up to Williamsport a couple weeks ago to give my fiddle a check-up. I've always had excellent experiences with the folks at J.R. Judd's, and this time was no exception. What an awesome shop they have up there! In case you're interested, the URL is http://www.jrjuddviolins.com.
Anyway, you don't really know how LITTLE you know about fiddles until you talk to an expert. Jerry, the luther on duty when I showed up (20 minutes before their closing time!) told me all kinds of cool stuff about the instruments he's worked on. I also learned a lot that I didn't know about MY violin.
For example, I *though* my violin was made in Rome, Italy in the early 1700s by a man named Francesco Juliano. Well, it turns out that my violin was (probably) made in Tirol, Austria in the mid-1750s, and it's all but impossible to nail down the maker. Huh.
From Jerry, I also learned the capabilities of master luthiers. Somebody actually MOVED my F-holes at some point in the past(!). I had no idea this was even possible! It must have been a herculean task to cut the bits of wood perfectly to fill in the former F-holes, because it's quite well done (in my opinion).
