Self-diagnosed with arthritis in my left wrist, I stopped fiddling. The residual pain and the lack of flexibility made playing no fun.
I hated not being able to make music. I'm too young for arthritis, I thought, and had just gotten to place where I had achieved some mastery. If I just waited, the pain and stiffness would go away.
It didn't.
I decided I wouldn't quit. Every U.S. drug store has a section for over the counter liniments for sore muscles and stiff joints. You can usually find patches there and I did: a box of Tiger Balm Pain Relieving Patches. I put one of these on my wrist about five minutes before I fiddled, loosen the wrist up playing some simple tunes and scales, and I could fiddle again. I left it on for about twelve hours after I played. The pain and stiffness are gone, but I still use the patches when I play.
This isn't a plug for Tiger Balm. There are other brands that would work just as well, I'm sure. (The drawback to all of these is that the manufacturers are pretty proud of these things and charge accordingly.)
All this to say, if you experience pain and stiffness in your wrist, these medicated patches may work for you, too.
