I got into green woodworking about a year or so ago, a side effect of hanging out with living history types (the medieval ones, no less). Some of them shoot target archery, and I tried that, and I liked it, and then realized that if I ever wanted a real wood bow I'd have to learn to make it myself, which led to getting a small selection of hand tools, over time, and an interest in hand tool woodworking in general. I'm not good, but I have fun.
Earlier this year, as I was reading about medieval woodworking, I stumbled across the site of someone who recreates medieval musical instruments, and that site detailed the construction of a pochette, and a rebec. For some reason, that little thing (the pochette) really caught my eye. About that same time I ran across a book on violin making, which was kind of an "Aha!" moment, for me, and I ended up with the crazy idea that I might actually be able to build something with strings, and that it might actually make a sound. Crazy, because I can't read music, and I don't know how to play any kind of instrument! But, there's nothing like good fiddle music, and I figure if there's any place where I might learn how it all really works, it'd be here! And, here I am with a few sharp tools, and a little free time, so, here goes nothing!
