Now that I have a few tunes under my belt and my tone has improved it's time to smooth of the rough edges.
I had to skip my usual stint on the fiddle yesterday and only had about 15 mins with my banjo Dixie instead. I am finding that a subconscious learning happens on one instrument when I practice on the other. Tonight when I got a chance to play Claudette (my fiddle BTW) I found that the practice of the previous week had really sunk in. I was running through Morpeth rant at a fair lick and because I was intuitaveley hitting the right notes I could really let go and add some expression. I am considering trying a night off a week from Claudette : I guess it's like a bottleneck where if you keep trying to shove stuff in it gets jammed up, wheras if you let it be a while it flows through. Also I think Dixie would appreciate the extra attention.
I don't know how many of you attribute personalities to your instruments. I guess If I was a professional I might not think that way : carpenters don't usually name their hammers. Coming to music later in life (early 20's, age not date) I think it helped me appreciate instruments as something more than a thing. Giving them a 'soul' in my mind helps develop a relationship with your instrument. Thinking of your fiddle/banjo/guitar as missing you when you don't practice (or punishing you in the case of my guitar Tracy) helps set a practice routine. Maintainance becomes a pleasant routine rather than a chore and as with human relationships instruments love presents (restring, overhaul, new pickup/bridge,etc). And woe betide anyone who threatens or mistreats any of my girls.
Folks may think I'm odd (and a lot, in fact most do), but I have a lot of fun with my ladies and who really cares what most folks think? I just care what the folks that matter think.
