Woodwind Reeds in a Fiddle??

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

I recently bought an old Maggini copy, I'm guessing it's 70- 80 years old. There is no label in it but when looking inside I see there are two pieces of wood attached near the endpin that form a "V" shape projecting toward the "F" holes. Each piece is a couple of inches long x about 1/2" wide and 1/8" thick, flat on one side and radiused on the other side. The name "PRESTINI" is stamped on one of them ( possibly both, but I can't see the other side very well). Researching "PRESTINI" I find they make reeds for woodwind instruments, so I'm thinking this may be what these are. Why they are inside this violin I have no idea.  Has anyone ever seen anything like this?  Did any original makers do anything like this?
