EPIPHANY!!! EPIPHANY!!!!

Friday, April 9, 2010

As the song goes..."I see the light, I see the light"

I've read so much about cross tunning here at the hangout, I thought I would GOOGLE it. Welllllllll...to my surprixe, not a whole lot, which is alright. I'm a music teacher, this shouldn't be too too hard!! AND IT WASN'T!!!!!

1) The fiddle sounds really "fiddle like" when you cross tune into the key you are playing in. It seems the resonance of the unplayed  strings compliment what you are playing. In other words...the Fiddle sounds crisp, in tune, and a whole he-double-hockey-sticks of a lot better. I have found changing the strings in my A tunes makes them sound wayyyyyy better, and I actually sound like I know what I'm doing - GO FIGUR'. Lifting the 4th to A for the key of D allows me a new range of sounds that you can do on guitar or piano, but somewhat difficult on the fiddle (I find anyhow).

2) My guitar students have learned LIBERTY in C which is not a half bad key to learn it in on the guitar, but on fiddle it's a nightmare. but "fret not" (pun intended) if I cross tune Gdgd (small letters showing the strings changed) I use my D fingering 99.9% of the song and voila I am palayying LIBERTY in C as I would in D. Now my students can practice their chording as I play the tune. YIPPEE!

3) All of a sudden it's not so daunting to play double stops using either the 5th or the root for the chord. Ain't liife grand?!

4) And it really isn't so hard to fiure out the fingering, I just have to remember if I cross tuned - that could be a challenge...with my memory [ I can go to the bathrooom and forget why I went there :-) ]

So if anyone is wondering about cross tunning....I say GO FOR IT!!!!!
