You know..I love the fiddle..I love to hear good fiddlers play, I even enjoy some bad fiddlin!!
I have ben playing the guitar for about 40 years and consider myself to be an advanced player, and not too bad. I took up mandolin about 20 years ago, and just play in on occasion..Church and a few jams. I can play a bass fiddle, banjo...most anyting with strings. But when I started trying learn the fiddle....Oh man!!
It didn't take too long to learn the scales...even got used to not having frets to guide me. But that dang bow!!! I can play a few things, not alot, but a few. And the slower the better! I even got to where I can play Ragtime Annie pretty well and Flop Earred Mule, and a few more. Now I am working on Back up and Push...pretty easy till you get to the C part with the Hokum bowing!! Hokum bowing???? Who came up with that!!! If no one played, I wouldn't have to!!! It looks so easy when the good fiddlers do it..they dont even look like they are concentrating on it...maybe they aren't....I CAN'T DO IT!!! I try every day to play that style. I can get close, at times, but most of the time it just sounds like someone that picked up a fiddle for the first time and started sawing!
I'm gonna keep trying..mainly because an instrument never kicked my butt like the fiddle. My wife makes me go into our soundproof music room if she is at home...my cat runs, and my dark just covers his eyes.
I heard Wayne Massengale say the fiddle is a "User Unfriendly" Instrument a few years ago...he is right!
