Waltz Group

I LOVE PLAYING WALTZ! I'm glad to see this group formed. Although overlooked by many fiddlers these days, waltz playing IMO, really separates the men from the boys. The skills, bow control, intonation, tone, timing, double stops, slides etc. that are required to effectively play a waltz are considerable. One can improve his ability to play the fiddle by spending time working on waltzes. There are so many beautiful and fun waltz to learn that you have an endless supply to choose from. Some of my favorite are: Gardenia, Golden Fiddle, Old South, Dreamers & Roxanna.

I really like that Golden Fiddle waltz and the Gardenia Waltz is a great "double stoppy" tune

I just joined this Waltz Group-I don't play much, but my 1st dream when I started learning fiddle was to play Waltzes & Slow Aires - strolling thru some local restaurant playing soft music for patrons while they enjoyed their romantic lovely evening. Ah, well, so much for that, I am some 17 years since beginning & still can't play very well & have only about 2 waltzes under my belt & only a few of the old standards in my repertoire. One can always dream can't they?

I play in a trio (piano, concertina/accordion, fiddle) that plays a variety of waltzes. We're always looking for new ones, so I'm hoping to get recommendations from this group. I like to play oldtime American waltzes with other fiddlers when I get the chance. "Waltzing With the One I Love" (from Sam Bayard's collection of W. PA fiddle tunes) comes to mind. It's a simple and lovely tune. I've recently discovered O'Carolan's 2nd setting of "Maurice O'Connor," which can be a played for dancing. The list is endless!

I've always loved to play waltzes. I bought Jay Ungar's "Waltzes and Slow Aires" instructional video a long time ago and it's still my favorite video/dvd. As for the waltzes, some of my favorites are Lover's Waltz (by Jay), Eileen's Waltz (Mark Schatz) and Kathleen's Waltz by the late great Randy Howard. I'm actually learning Kathleen's now. Those moving doulestops are tough!

Lover's Waltz is a beauty! I've just started working on Wild Rose of the Mountain ( Scottish Aire) and Margaret's Waltz.

I also love waltz's. I just learned the Golden Fiddle Waltz by the late Randy Howard. I hope to play Kathleens eventually. The Yellow rose is on the learn list yet, and I need to finish Gardenia yet. I would like to get a good recording of the Blue Skirt Waltz also. So many fine waltz's to learn, I keep changing my favorites. Such fun!
