Margaret's Waltz

From TimK on 2/23/2011 9:43:49 AM

My favorite waltz is usually the last one I've learned :). At the moment that is Margaret's Waltz. It is a lovely Shetland Islands (scottish) tune in the key of A. I am working on the version by Aly Bain which is available on U-Tube. If anyone would like the manuscript for this tune feel free to e-mail me and I'll be happy to send it along.

Great waltz. First heard it from JP Fraley. Would love the manuscript; its my wife's favorite and would like to play it at my daughter's upcoming wedding. Thanks. Bink binkwms@gmail.com

Bink, JP Fraley learned this waltz from Aly Bain. The Fraley version is in the key of G, Bain plays it in A. The manuscript is just the basic melody but the Aly Bain , U-Tube clip shows how he embellishes it ever so sweetly!. I'll scan the manuscript and send it to you.

Thanks so much for the information and the transcript. Also, love Gow's lament for his second wife. Just beautiful!

I've added my version of this tune to my music page. Fiddle and two guitar parts, Chords on one tract and bass line on another. The fiddle has a touch of echo and the guitar, compression and reverb.

When I posted a fiddle tab chart for Margaret's Waltz
(100fiddletunes.com/fiddletunet...ets-waltz), I got a comment about the man who wrote it.
The comment was: Margaret’s Waltz is by Pat Shaw, an English singer, dancer, musician, composer, dance writer, ethnomusicologist. He wrote many, many tunes. He died in 1977.

Interesting TimK, I learned this waltz from JP and he played it in A.
