Cross Tunings

From hayesdt on 10/3/2011 1:05:29 PM

Are there any cross tunings that viola fiddle players might use?

Would any such tunings require any differently gauged string sets?

Well, after the post of cross-tuning for "Midnight on the Water" in DDAD, and hearing a clip of someone playing it like that, I tried tuning the viola to GGDG. I had no problems doing it, tuning the high string down and the low string wayyy down, and it sounded cool, but wasn't something that I would want to keep the viola in. I guess I'm just not a cross-tuning type of guy.
