Well, I was thinking of starting a Northern California group,

"philips"- what style(s) of fiddling are you interested in???
I'd like to get up to Portland to check out the music scene there,
but it's a pretty long drive.

I have only been playing for a year. Having fun playing simple tunes of all styles but my favorites to play so far are from the American south.
A couple of fun bands and artists to checkout from Portland:
- Decemberists - very propular band now and they added a fiddle on their latest album.
- Fruition - they have an album up on CD baby that is fun
- Portland Cello Project - creative cello applications :)
- My instructor does a lot of good stuff but keeps slacking on getting a recording made http://www.myspace.com/walkinghomemusic

Hi philips, I'm a little over a year in, also. I've heard of the Decemberists...didn't know they were a Portland band. I'm envious that you're down there in Kevin Burke territory, although who knows if he gives any more workshops or performances there than all over the world?
