Turning The Corner

From fiddlerd on 10/2/2012 11:38:02 AM

Well I'm out of the traffic jam. Now I'm on the open road and rounding the first corner to sounding like a fiddle player. I have a long way to go but I'm starting to flow. I feel comfortable with the bow and one with my fiddle. It has taken hours, days, weeks and months......it has been a fun journey. With the help of my teacher I'm on my way to playing the way I dreamed about. The next couple of months will be fun with the cooler weather, the holiday's and my fiddle!

I'm glad you're having fun and improving your fiddle playing. Maybe this will encourage some other people.

Just started about a month ago. I could see on day one that it was going to be ugly. But, with practice, I was rewarded with some sounds I didn't think I could make. What a delight! I got started with a nice student model violin and I can get away from everyone in a separate room over the garage. No one can hear me, so I can just let it screech and moan without a thought. It helps. I love the difficulty and the rewards from practicing. The screeching and moaning are lessening. I know its going to be a long time to learn, but, so what? I love it.

Lynn1, It's so rewarding when the sceeeching and moaning turn into a song! You have to do what your doing. Get by yourself so you can relax and put yourself into the song. I have a cheap fiddle I didn't like. I said that fiddle isn't any good. I played on another one for months. One day I was house cleaning and was moving the cheap fiddle and was in a playing mood pulled it out and put my good bow on it and was amazed how good it sounded. It wasn't the fiddle It was me. Time and patience pays off when you practice. It's still a cheap fiddle but my playing has improved over the last year and it was fun working that thing till I had those songs sounding pretty darn good! Stick with it .....IT'S FUN!!!!

You really do not have to play for months to get rid of the screeching sound. I promise all my new students that after just one lesson, they will be able to make a pretty sound with their bow on the violin. It works every time.

Wow! Riddlerd and paulinefiddle, those are really encouraging words. I just love the sound. I listen to cds and utube and figure I'll try to make myself sound like that one day. I've been working on my bowing a lot. It really does make a difference. Still got lots of work to go, though. All fun.

I'm not saying this to create business for myself as a teacher, but I strongly recommend taking a few lessons with a teacher who can watch and listen to you and give you feedback on how to make a pretty sound. Some of my Skype students are self taught fiddlers who got fed up with their sound and decided to take a few lessons, sometimes spaced out over time for budgetary reasons. I can honestly say that I helped them a lot with just one or two lessons. They wish they had known what I've taught them much earlier before they ingrained bad habits which they had to unlearn. You really should not continue discouraging yourself or your family members when help is available. A little bit of teaching can go a long way towards fiddle happiness.

I might do that. I need to learn more about this "Skype". Yes, I know you could help me.
