Morning Coffee and Fiddle

From fiddlerd on 6/6/2012 9:41:27 AM

I was wondering how many in the group enjoys a cup of coffee and plays the fiddle while the sun comes up. I love playing in the cool morning air and watch a beautiful sunrise. It makes for a great way to start the day.

I can't think of a better way to start any day! How do the neighbors handle it? I play with a mute so my continual practicing won't drive people crazy.

My neighbors are just out of ear shot so I don't have to worry about that. I have a buffer zone.....now my neighbor's cows and horses might need ear plugs!

Let's just say I'm in the "thickly settled" way of life in the burbs of Boston. I have to travel about 15 miles to be near horses and such. When I visit the horse ranch, I bring my fiddle and play for them. They don't get to hear much fiddle either. You should see the horses gather when the fiddle gets warmed up.

I live with my dog on a five acre parcel so I don't bother anyone. Being somewhat compusive I tend to practice a lot. The dog has returned to my side once she having disabused herself of the notion that I had not caught something and was eating it alive and she was next.
I play in the morning while waiting for my eggs to cook and while waiting for the bath to fill. I play in the dark on the patio with the instrument that started it; a three-digit cremona that I found in a pawn shop for not much. I especially enjoy sawing on the cheap fiddle because I can actully make it work. When I first got it I could not make it play and figured it was just the cheapness of the instrument that made things do difficult. Now I know better because when I got just a tiny bit better the pawn shop fiddle somehow magically healed and became somewhat playable.
I play at the office with a mute and can see that the natives are restless as some pass my office door with their hands over their ears. Maybe I should relate that I don't "play" as much as I "preacitce." Its a steep learning curve for me but there are moments of such clairity where I actually think I'm getting it. Still the "Oh craps" are more frequent then the "Atta-boys."
I play in the evenings as baseball doesn't really have to include the sound.

My dog is getting used to my playing. I'm not saying that my fiddling has improved....he likes to keep one eye me and the other eye on the kitchen.

I have to play in the morning or after 5 PM. I live next door to the office in my apartment and the manager comes in at 10:00am. Don't have to worry about neighbors, no one lives up stairs.

That is my most favorite time, not yet tired from the days work. The mute is a wonderful way to keep my neighbors from calling the cops. The dogs kinda hide in the front room, and the beautiful Mrs. nfritzjr is in the shower so she can't hear. Life is good. :-)

I laughed when I saw this topic. I've been experimenting with different practice schedules and the kick that I'm on now is when I'm done getting ready to go to work in the morning, I start a pot of coffee and pick up the fiddle while it's brewing.

It's not like I make a ton of progress in that 10 minutes, but it at least ensures that I play every day if I'm not able to practice in the evening.
