I've been working hard on the fiddle and I thought I sounded pretty good.....then reality set in! It's sad when you think your not ready for the dogs on the porch. But the good news is I have had a break through and I can hear improvement. I'm finding my sound now and style. I want to thank everybody for their comments, blogs and discussions. It's nice to get info from fiddler's out there that love to play.

I'm glad you've found your "voice." You'll sound better and have a lot more fun now. Dogs are not reliable music critics.

Thanks. It's nice to hear a song come together. I purchased a good student fiddle. I'm going to change the tailpiece and put new strings on it today. It will be my practice workhorse. It's the porch fiddle!!!!

Try playing the "hound dog song" for the dogs on the porch . This is an ole timey song that will leave em bark'in for joy . If you need the notes tabulature or words let me know . It starts out like this ...every time i come to town .... the boys keep kick'in my dog around ....makes no diffrence.. he's a hound .... they gotta quit kick'in my dog around !!!

Ok sent ya the hound dog tabulature and words song sheet . The dog's will be happier than a boilwevel in da bugtussle now . They will roll around on the front porch like they got into a bag of dog nip . Yessur and be sure to let out a big howl at the end of the song to as a bonus . Happy howl'in Scott barn'billy

I can relate to your comment on your new bow as your new best friend. What kind of bow is it? I love the braided carbon fiber bows. Enjoy! I look forward to reading about your new fiddle.

It's a carbon fiber. They were out of the wood bow I wanted and the girl that works there told me(for the second time) that it was the best bow for the money. She was right...light easy to use and great sound. It took awhile to rosin up....but when it was ready I said she knows what she's talking about!

I'm glad to hear that you're a convert. I find that the CF bows handle really easily and give great sound.

This was the single biggest problem i had starting out . I thought i had the bow cross wise to fiddle by looking down the strings because it looked even across the strings from distance from bridge . Well go stand in front of a mirror and where you can see where the bow really is as far as crooked with the violin . When i look down the bridge to strings it now looks like a degree angle when the bow is correct . Check your self to see if this is a problem to get good sounds also .

I too have noticed a definate improvement in my sound...and ability to play. I am debating on whether to play some Irish tunes for my family when I visit them for St. Paddy's.....I want them to enjoy my music, but if I flub up..I'm afraid they won't want to hear it again. It's a wonderful thing...GETTING something in the fiddle...you should be proud you stuck with it! I'm proud that I am more stubborn than my fiddle! Enjoy!

Thanks group, your comments are appreciated! barnbilly that's something I have to watch. When I took that fiddle workshop he corrected me and said i was pulling the bow toward my body. It's about having the right angle. nancymae if you feel comfortable play for them!! I want to play in front of others by Christmas. It's a big goal but I want to get past the nervous bow shaking in front of people and the only way to do that is put yourself out there. If I can get my bow technique to where I have a decent sound I will play in front of family and friends at Christmas.

Most folks realize how hard it is to get any reasonable sounds that sound like a song so i would vote >>YES and if you make any mistakes that are big, just smile and i bet they will smile with you . You have alot to be proud of just being able to play and they may have some pride showing that they have a family member who can play a song . If you need a real bail out i always say i never met anyone who's playing was worse than when they first started out . I would love to be able to play and sing .... walk in the irish rain ...may try on banjo first .

Me and the mountain flower are doing 5 fiddle songs together now so i will you tube one or two in the future and will post here . youtube.com/watch?feature=play...sjFLkx1Qo

Thanks for your coments barnbilly and fiddlerd....I will let you know how it went!! I'll tell them all, the dog stopped barking at me, and the cat came home...so I MUST be getting better! (and it's true...the cat did go and hide..and the dog used to let me play about an hour, then he would start barking at me) Now I can play for 2 hours...and the animals basically act the same as when I'm not playing...so if that isnt improvement, I don't know what is!!!! I'll take my fiddle there..and let "her rip!!! :-) thanks for the comments!

Oh yeah, fiddlerd--my teacher corrected my posture, and made me put my peg box up and my intonation improved 100%!!!! Now, to make sure, I put my music stand so I HAVE to look up at it, to remind me. Thanks for the tip!

What's a peg box ????
|
 | barnbilly56 says: 3/13/2012 5:44:42 PM
I know where the pegs go into the fiddle but how do you put that up ???
|
 | barnbilly56 says: 3/15/2012 12:56:34 PM
Rut row !!!!! I stopped the conversation, so time to move on from the peg box question .

 | fiddlerd says: 3/15/2012 1:43:56 PM
Not at all barnbilly! With the talk about the peg I started thinking about a keg. With St. Patrick's day on Sat. I have a well stocked fridge and the fiddle is all tuned up. 'Tis Irish I am on my mom's side of the family!

Barnbilly, "keep your pegbox up" means that you should hold your entire violin up at shoulder level. If you let it droop, your bow will slide down over the fingerboard by gravity. Nancymae, my teacher taught me to have the scroll of my violin level with the first line of music on the page. It really works.

I'm being taught that way also pauline . Just did'nt know ya call it that so learned something new about that .

That's what i like about this site and the group. Reading your comments helps me when I practice. I worked on keeping my peg box up. Pauline great tip about the scroll. Thanks!
