Havin Fun

From fiddlerd on 2/19/2012 5:06:11 PM

I'm having so much fun practicing on my fiddle. It feels good to be learning a song. I played pretty good this morning. You heard the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....well sounding good is in the ear of the listener. So while practicing I was all excited about my improved playing then I told my dog Rocky. " If I had to play for my supper I'd go hungry!!

Congrats and yes it's a big reward to get the songs to sound like there suppost to and smooth too .Yup if i had to play for my supper every night would be raw oatmeal but if i keep talking nice to the fiddles some day i might get a steak . Now i know these song are hidden away in there and get a few out with alot fun effort .
Happy string scratch'in

Congrats from me too. The more notes you get under your fingers the better it gets. Just be careful. Make sure your not gripping the neck or the bow too tight. It doesn't take much pressure to get a good tone. Might as well invest in a mute, for the dog:) keep fiddling Larry

Yep, me too. I love to play so much that I often ignore the bad notes. And I would also go hungry, but that's the price you pay for the fun.

I agree, I know about 4 songs now and I am so stoked, Ha! My daughter says it is starting to sound like music and she is a tough critic, so that made me happy! Don't give up, keep on a fiddling!! Congrats !!

Thanks group! Larry your right about gripping the neck. The first thing my teacher said to me was quit gripping that neck and went over how to do it right. That alone made a huge difference and my hand was free to move and my fingers are starting to flow. I love it!!

Just remember this feeling down the road because there will be phases when you might not feel like you're making any progress, get frustrated with it and yourself and, possibly contemplate giving it up. Don't lose hope! You will get better as long as you just keep on fiddling.
As for the dog and playing for our food....the dog I had when I first started playing would hide under the bed as soon as he saw me grab the case. He didn't even let me get the instrument out before taking off. I'd a-starved!

Another tip is, keep your fiddle out of its case as much as possible. Its easy to walk by the case. I got a hanger that fits on my music stand. Its within reach right now. Yall keep fiddling. Larry

Ya i'm a beliver in Larrys idea also . I am mostly banjo player and have a banjo in up right stand on each side of my T.V. so i guess you could say they get to watch t.v. with me so alot of times i turn that off for one on one banjo playing and alot of play with tv on for extra distractions , Now the fiddle i always keep case open laying on a spare bed in extra bed room and every trip to bathroom i walk by the fiddle laying case open and fiddle book right next to it . I also started a habit to atleast take and play atleast 15 minutes a day and you would be amazed how quickly you get better everytime you do this but i play atleast 4 songs and usally get more than 15 minutes in .

One thing i did to keep it simple starting out is i took where the notes are and wrote below them what they are like E - E2- A1- A- A3 ect and highlighted the letters with yellow highlight pen . When i' playing i don't have to figure out what they are on scale lines but just look below untill i get use to playing fully developed playing skills . I was also amazed how much i can play to memory which use to be "what memory" also .

Thanks for the tips! I've had a busy work week but still found time to practice on my fiddle. I was talking about going hungry. Well the more I practice the hungrier I get to learn and play. I love fiddle music.....so I get the best of both I'm having fun learning to play and I get to listen to the fiddle at the same time!! It's got me starving for more!
