Thanks Pauline, I will get the book and cd. I agree with you about a personal teacher it's nice to have that feedback. I learned alot in just one lesson and I'm looking forward to my next lesson in a couple of weeks.

I'm glad that you're getting the book and DVD. They make learning fun. Fiddlerd, I'm glad that you're taking lessons when you can. It sounds like you've found a good teacher for you.
If you're taking fiddle lessons infrequently because of your budget, I have a suggestion. Some of my students get a work scholarship from me. I give them free or half price lessons in exchange for doing work for me around the house.

I think it's great you do that for your students. I would gladly exchange work for lessons. I'm a Mr. fixit kind of guy and love carpentry.

I always give my instructors free photography. I never ask for free lessons cause I know they are trying to make a living like the rest of us. I just take a lesson when I can afford it. It's nice , though, that you offer bartering.

I agree SusieQ. I would only consider it if they asked me. Then I would give them a break on my labor. After just one lesson I feel it's worth every penny. I have seen improvements on everything we went over. I can't wait till the next lesson!!

SusiQ, what kind of free photography do you give to your instructors?

Pauline, Usually picture of themselves or a concert or jam they are in. I also enjoy passing along books or movies that may be of interest. Fiddlerd, I wish you lived near here I could sure use a handiman! I am looking forward to that new DVD!

Miss Pauline, I dont know how you go about it. My instructor would give us two new songs aweek. Now I'm an older student. Trying to improve on the songs you have already learned in class, figuring out the music, one note at a time and learning two new songs aweek would be too much at times. Now the instructor had me buy a Sony recorder, and he would record the new songs each week, to play along with. Which was a great thing, but an hr. practice would turn into 3 hrs. easy. I know what your teaching us seems so easy to you folks that know it, sometimes it takes us old dogs a little longer to pick it up. Larry

Larry, most of my students are adult beginners, and I don't make them struggle as much as you. My method of teaching is very different from your teacher's, and I don't mean to criticize or insult him. I start my students out with the very basics and then build on them. They start with open strings and scales on one string and then go to simple tunes (Twinkle, Boil Them Cabbage Down). They build up slowly to reach the point when they can play more complex and fun tunes. Good technique is everything, and I believe that you should learn it and build on it gradually. For folk tunes, I start my students with American Fiddle Method Book 1 by Brian Wicklund. There is a DVD that goes with the book, and Wicklund teaches a lot very well. Recording the tunes at your lesson is very good. You don't need to feel bad that you're slow because you're an adult. Your teacher is giving you some touch stuff to learn.

Dr. Learner, I have to defend my instructor, leave it to my poor grammer, ect. to leave the wrong impression. The work I spoke of was after the scales, arpeggios, etudes, then the second book. I understand what he was doing, when I would have a lesson, he would have a mandolin player standing next to me playing, with us. And the instructor would after a few bars start playing his fiddle out of tune, time, just anyway trying to mess me up. He was wanting me to ignore everything and concentrate on the song and what I was suppose to do. All of this and the work was so I could move on to a group lesson and play with a group that he taught next and not mess it up. Then life happened and I had to stop, for awhile. I still practice alot everyday, and have learnt several new songs from folks on the net. Working on blackberry blossom now. I admire you and anyone who teaches old hard headed folks like me. Larry

Thanks for the compliment, Larry, and please call me Pauline. I did not mean to criticize your teacher's method of teaching. It's just different from mine. Blackberry Blossom is absolutely beautiful. What is your source? The Fiddler's Fakebook has a good version that is also good for strengthening the fourth finger. It's much more fun, and just as effective, as doing 4th finger exercises. I and some of my students also like the version in Craig Duncan's Master Fiddle Solo Collection. It has a lot of good variations. I'm glad you're working hard and having fun with your fiddle.

Pauline, sorry to take so long. The music I have came from a FHO member instructor, Fiddling Mike Roland. I also copied a scale three note roll exercise from him that really helps in the first parts of Blossom. I also copied some lessons from u tube from a champion fiddler who really gets after you keeping a curved pinkie, and shows how easy it is to tilt your wrist in just a little to reach any string with it. Ive realy started to notice folks with a flat fourth finger and it looks unconformable. Hope this finds you doing well, keep fiddling. Larry
