The Violin Beautiful - Posted - 06/25/2025:  07:31:38

Here is a video about the preservation and transmission of Hardanger fiddling through Maryland’s folklife apprenticeship program. Just from this little segment you can easily see the love and dedication that has gone into maintaining this distinct Scandinavian tradition of playing and instrumentation and thy joy that the master and apprentice share in the promulgation of the culture. The master fiddler shows such eagerness for building up her student and even participating in some exploratory music with her. It is bookended beautifully by the master fiddler reflecting on her own gratitude to her teachers who came before.

This style of funded apprenticeship program is a great incentive for established and aspiring musicians and artisans alike. Virginia has been doing this for over 20 years, and as a participant myself I can attest that it’s an amazing program.
