Last night I acquired a new-to-me fiddle with a brass tailpiece. I've never seen that, or even heard of it. Does anyone here have experience with that?

Honestly, I was dropping off some stuff for a club's garage sale, and the fiddle was on top of one of the stacks. The lady running the thing told me to just take it. She said she could sell guitars but didn't know if anyone would buy a violin, and she didn't even know who donated it.

Bad idea. You want the lightest tailpiece possible. But hey, free fiddle!

Another "free" fiddle that costs a bit to be playable? Actually, I think this just needs a bridge, and probably new pegs, because these are very worn.

Not something I have seen or heard of. Seems like it would add a great deal of weight to a fiddle. Unusual to say the least. Let us know what you think when you get it playable.

I don’t remember seeing brass before, but I have seen titanium (recently) and steel, and a friend has a copper tailpiece that was made by a slave who worked as a blacksmith and played and made his own fiddle.

While a heavy tailpiece is bad for sound, going too light is equally bad.
