Here's an old one from my Steak House sangin' days...which didn't last very long and were so long ago I can barely remember. But anyway, I just haven't thought of it for a long time and for whatever crazy reason it up and popped into my head last night. Trust me, the way my life is, it took me all day trying and a lot of critical moments of madness ensuing to get this little thing done...lol. Not sure I did very good with the mixing, but it was just time to give up, so this is what I got...it's a miracle I even got this much...lol...ugh...life does get teejus, don't it? Well here we go...banjo in Double C and capoed up to D, fiddle in ADAD, and voice just hangin' on from one insane minute to the next...lol.

What an incredibly beautiful tune and how touching are these lyrics... I never heard these before! It brings back memories of stories my grandmother told me about the atmosphere after the war ... how many girls fell in love with soldiers but soon had to say goodbye and were left heartbroken and how on the other hand some girls were punished severely and treated shamelessly cruel and barbaric for actual or alleged collaboration...

Thanks, Scotty...I always figured it must've come from Ireland, or somewhere over there across the big pond...lol...if so, we probably messed with it enough to Americanize it beyond compare...lol. Anyway, it's an old from somewhere. Thanks for the kind comments.

Thanks Anja. Yes it seems to have been a common theme about soldiers lonely and far away and how it affected the young girls. Thanks for the kind comments.

That was absolutely beautiful my friend, a tip of the ol’ coffee cup to ya and hope you have a great upcoming week!

I sing a version of this... different melody. Melvin Wine fiddled it. I've read it's English from way back in the 1600s

Thanks, Loy. Coffee tipped to you, too, my friend...and have a nice day.

Shawn, I used to sing this in the old Steak House back in the 70s and I think I had about three versions I often sang just with guitar. I'd like to hear your version at some point or other.

Wow lovely, Peggy!
And the moon picture goes perfect with the mood of the song.

Peggy, funny, this song has been in my mind lately for some reason, alhough with a different melody and I don't really know most of the words. I think its also commonly known as "One Morning in May" and "The Soldier and the Lady." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Mo...g_in_May_(folk_song)
Apparently old and English in origin, also collected in Canada and the US, but not Ireland or Scotland. I think the version I "know" comes from Beech Mountain, NC, although James Taylor recorded it with that lyric so it was "around." Jean Ritchie recorded a couple versions too.
I just got one of my button accordions out to try his one, and if I remember how to play it maybe I can post something.

Thanks, NC. I slapped up that photo of the moon out of desperation to hurry and finish...lol...then realized I had just recently used the same photo for another song...I think it was I Guess He'd Rather be in Colorado...so...lol...well-used moon photo.

Thanks Doug. Yeah, seems to be one of those old songs that's been around a lot and morphed into several versions. I'd love to hear you play it...hope you can play it for us one of these days!
