Looking for advice on how to safely remove cork residue from varnish after removing a chin rest. Thanks.

Unfortunately, there isn't an easy solution to this problem and it has to be evaluated on a case by case basis.
When I'm dealing with this issue, my approach is determined by the depth to which the cork has become embedded in the varnish. If the instrument is new and has varnish that's still curing, the cork may well be deep enough that when it is removed it will pull varnish down to the wood. Losing varnish is to be avoided as much as possible, so one has so tread very carefully. In mild cases I am often able to remove the majority with a scraper used in such a way as to remove cork without touching the varnish. From there it is often a matter of using a powdered abrasive in oil to clean off the rest. Where varnish has come off I do touchup or French polishing to even things out.

This is a conundrum. What TVB writes is good advice. I would tape off the surrounding area, use a little heat like from a blow dryer, and not past warm, then scrape with a piece of stiff plastic or a thumbnail. If the cork is imbedded in the varnish a fine grit car wax, Meguiars, on a Q tip or fine cloth may help remove some of the imbedded material but it will not remove all of it. Good luck. R/
