I have the opposite problem. I don't think it was ever there on my laptop, and now it is and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Its annoying. Only one of my current computer problems though, so I'll just live with it - I'm usually on a tablet anyway, in portrait orientation.

I think it depends on how big your browser is ... on my small monitor they don't show up, but on the bigger monitor they do

I dont understand what a 'browser' is..
I think 'monitor' means the screen..
Nothing changed in my computer set up and had that 'side bar' for years.

Henry - I think Mark's post was a little fuzzy. The browser is the software that allows you to connect to and navigate the Internet.
The monitor is the screen, and its really amazing how webpages are manipulated to display on everything from a phone to a desktop monitor.
I don't know what may have changed in you situation. Usually there's a menu item like "Settings" where you can configure what will be displayed and how, but I don't see it for this site.

I believe it has to do with zooming in or zooming out
