Hey Rich…great job on that. You sounded good…and the pace sounds pretty good…you actually made my jam track sound good…lol. Seriously it sounded good…I like the way you played and the stops in the sound track went great in your b part! Thanks so much! Fun jammin with ya.

nickmc - Posted - 03/04/2022:  12:48:41

I was inspired by the "vintage" video and Groundhogpeggy's backing track, so i made a weird 1930s version of the tune for fun today too!

Nice fiddling, Nick...I love those cricket sounds...lol!

NCnotes - Posted - 03/05/2022:  11:34:52

Attached is my solo version from back then. It's a barn burner, whereas the one with banjo is more dance tempo. I also noticed that I posted the banjo one at minutes past midnight, literally as early as possible angel

Ha ha, yes, definitely a barn burner! You get such good rhythm in your bowing. And I like the ending...

NCnotes - Posted - 03/05/2022:  11:37:04

Nickmc, sounds good! I like the creative cricket noises!

It's been so fun hearing this tune done every which way.... :-)

Thank you! Rhythm is king, as they say. If you go to the details page you will see that the ending was sort of a lark and I just didn't want to record it again laugh

The problem with trying to slow down a breakdown for students is that you end up with a lot of empty space and its tempting to fill it with extra notes or by altering the melody. Or maybe Cecil just knows a different version of this tune.

I'd suggest this version by Walt and Clare as a better model. If its too fast you can always slow it down. youtu.be/-bepDi1-fgM

There is also a good version on YouTube by Benton Flippen and an elegant one by Kenny Baker.

The B-part strongly sounds like Marmaduke's HP.

ChickenMan - Posted - 03/05/2022:  21:01:43

Those tunes pretty much are a version of each other (Cricket and Marmaduke's)

Ha ha, your dog barking sounds like the equivalent of my daughter and her potato-chip snacking!

Hopefully he was barking harmoniously in the key of D. :-)

After Kenny Baker's version...Sort of like the dots i posted...indecision

Thanks Peggy, i just found out why it sounds so weird. My on-board sound card has "noise reduction" enabled, which makes it sound more like a Cricket In The Bath, rather than on the hearth, LoL.

groundhogpeggy - Posted - 03/07/2022:  04:15:27

Lol...doggone those crickets on the...or in the ... wherever...lol.

Were you able to disable the "noise reduction" setting?  How? and are you on Windows?  I have a friend who might benefit from this.  Thank you.

Yes i went to....

Control Panel/Hardware and sound/Realtek HD Audio Manager/Microphone. Then there are a few options available in the microphone effects tab including "Noise Reduction" that you can check or uncheck

I am on a Windows 10 64 bit computer with an ASUS motherboard using on board sound....Hope this helps.

This is such a productive Topic/Thread or whatever for me. i have learned a lot of fiddle related stuff by just learning the new tunes. Thanks GHP and others for resurrecting the VFF

NCnotes - Posted - 03/08/2022:  13:25:38

Pete, so cool, really enjoyed that, it's great!

Well, here I am playing with Peggy's backing track, which I love! Thank you Peggy.

My cricket noises are SO bad, I do think I succeeded at sounding like a Donkey, HEE-HAW.

( So I threw in some artificial cricket noises, with cricket getting more and more disobedient as tune goes on...)

Hey ya'll...I talked to my fiddle instructor and asked about sheet music for Cricket on the Hearth. She hadn't heard of it and was interested in learning it herself! Is there anyone who has the sheet music?

Thank you!

Pamela :)

Hey Pete, ya fixed my bad cricket gaps! Thanks!
It sounds good and fun!
We sound good fast too. ( Of course I'd have to practice A LOT to get it going clean at that speed...)

Well Peggy & Pete, it's been great "jamming with you", thanks to our space-age technology...

pete_fiddle - Posted - 03/10/2022:  15:19:38

Thanks NC & Peggy...hope i didn't tread on any of your crickets..crying....wink .....

It's one month to the day since I had my wrist surgery and I'm back in the game! Here's my contribution, recorded on my phone, since I was too lazy to do it on my computer. Anyway, here we go! fiddlehangout.com/myhangout/me...archived=

Wow...back after one month! Congratulations and welcome back to the world of fiddling, Donna!

Sounds great! Sounds like that wrist is totally back. Great job with that ol' cricket on the hearth...nice fiddling.

Chickenman, are you kidding????? I feel like I've never heard of this tune in my whole life...lol...I must've been busy in TN when VFF did this...please don't tell me I played it...lol...I really do not remember it at all. I know I'm probably going crazy, but I hope not as bad as it seems...lol.

July 2014 VFF. There would be no other reason for me to learn it as it wouldn't have crossed my path without VFF. I have a bunch of tunes on my list that came from VFF.

Attached is my solo version from back then. It's a barn burner, whereas the one with banjo is more dance tempo. I also noticed that I posted the banjo one at minutes past midnight, literally as early as possible angel

That end literally rocks hahalaugh

Love this version as well!

Quincy - Posted - 03/26/2022:  02:28:32

This one is pretty hard for me to do, but played the first part slow and I must admit here I use reading notes. It goes too fast to play by ear to me.
I am having great fun with this topic however. You are all gifted players.
(I still feel struggling, at the moment I absolutely want to learn vibrato)
Might give it another try later on.

I loved that cat picking the tune, she is adorable <3

I uploaded a MIDI version as well i think it is in the "Tabs"....But i cant seem to attach it to this post

Sort of got it down on fiddle but not up to speed yet he plays it just over 120bpm i think!

Thank you for sharing! That will help me in the beginning.

groundhogpeggy - Posted - 03/26/2022:  04:36:21

Quincy...I think you're doing great. Dwight Diller calls it a situation of being, "Desperate to play," and you just really wanna advance faster than the speed of light. I guess we're all like that and especially in the early years of playing. We can, of course, slow things down or do whatever is necessary to play the tune for ourselves...no laws against that and I've always resorted to messin' with the tune to make it user-friendly for myself. Almost time for our next tune...I live in fear that we will pick Old Time Jam's only C tune...Billy in the Lowground...lol...boy that'll sure be a struggle for me if we get that one. Anyway, I think you're doing great...let's see what gets picked this time...hope it's something that we can easily handle...part of the fun is ... it might just be Billy in the Lowground...or worse...lol...let's hope for an easy one though. It's Bob's turn to pick again so I gotta wrangle him down to get him to get one for us soon.

Quincy - Posted - 03/26/2022:  04:55:19

Thank you groundhogpeggy, I am kind of deperate to play yes.

Looking forward to the next tune! One more week , then 17 days off, finally plenty of time and nothing to worry about.
I love violin time.

Got a late start but here is my attempt at Cricket on the Hearth.

groundhogpeggy - Posted - 03/26/2022:  13:06:01

Never too late, Randy! I love your version...it's so fiddly and just very laid back...nice job. Sounds good.

Astrang - Posted - 03/26/2022:  15:22:08

Thanks Peggy, learning some new tunes will be some good medicine for me. I’ve enjoyed everyone’s playing.
