I just received this CD today and I am quite impressed with it. It has some typically wonderful pieces in it, with Cal Scott's compositions and Kevin Burke interpreting his music. One of the things which made be buy it were the center four cuts - the suite of tunes (from which the album derives its name); ten traditional tunes arranged in four movements for a string quartet. Classical meets Irish, quite unlike other collaborations I've heard, and all wonderful, I am particularly partial to the Four Jigs (1st Movement) and the Air (3rd Movement). The cello's and viola and violin of the string quartet create a tension to the jigs giving it a new spin. You don't often hear a cello pulling a solo playing a jig. The Air is just so complex and beautiful to listen to it is hard to describe... a simple melody with complex counter work - beautiful in it's fragile balance. One of the things I really enjoy about it though is Mr. Burke's light touch and sparing use of vibrato.

Lastly, I have never heard the tune Rabbits ear (the first tune in the first track)... wow... written by Seamus Creagh it is just so cool. Cal Scott backs the track so subtly with just enough bass the second time through to create some droneish sound... cool playing.

I could go on about each track- since there are no filler tunes in here, each as good as the last.

Should you stumble upon it and are interested in this type of music, you're in for a real treat.

MarkS - I am going to a concert of Kevin Burke and Cal Scott on Feb 26 and I am thrilled! I heard Kevin a couple of years ago in the same small venue and it's a truly fantastic musical experience.

I heard Kevin and Cal last year in a small venue near Dallas, and it was outrageously good. Kevin was also the headliner fiddle instructor at the O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat in 2010 and wowed everyone there, too. I'm partial to Cal's waltzes (Parisian Nights and the Lighthouse Keeper's Waltz) as played by Kevin. It's a treat and a half.
